The Academy of Codfish of New England held its 25th Supper, on Monday, December 16, 2002, at the Spring-Primavera Restaurant, in Tiverton, Rhode Island.
It was a wonderful evening! We started with the Blessing in English and Portuguese, followed by the Portuguese soup and two codfish cakes, for each Compadre or Comadre. We had mixed salad and then the main course of Codfish – Bacalhau à Lagareiro - which was delicious and with roasted potatoes. Then Portuguese dessert was served. We had also red and white wine or soda, and coffee.
Our president delivered the “Faithful Friend” for this month. He selected Sacadura Cabral and Gago Coutinho, two Portuguese aviators, who crossed the Atlantic from Lisbon, Portugal to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1922, three years before Lindbergh crossed the North Atlantic from New York to Paris, alone.
Then we had the raffle with eleven prizes. It was a happy period selecting the eleven prizes. People were kept in a high degree of expectation.
This period was followed by original poetry, in English and Portuguese. Really masterpieces were revealed. They will be published in our next Bulletin.
And finally we had the period of jokes. Several participants gave us their wisdom and humor so everyone went home with several good laughs.
We had again 130 people attending this supper. More women than men!
Our Assistant treasurer, Comadre Maria de Lurdes da Silva, prepared a gift for everyone attending this supper. It was a pleasant gesture, proving to our members that they are part of our family, typical of Portuguese-American family, like in the old days!
Our
next supper – 26th -- is going to be on January 20, 2003,
at
the Beira Alta Restaurant, in Fall River, Massachusetts.
