Manuel Luciano da Silva, Medical Doctor Biography
He was born in September 5, 1926, in the village of Cavião, Vale de Cambra, District of Aveiro, Continental Portugal. He attended the elementary school in Cavião, Leixões and Oliveira de Azeméis. He completed the high school in Oliveira de Azeméis.
Immigrated to Brooklyn, New York City, with his mother and brother to join his father in January 1946. Worked at Westinghouse Electric International Company (as a mail boy), and then as secretary at the Portuguese General Consulate, while attending school at night. In 1948 entered Washington Square College, New York University, and graduated in 1952 with Biology Major. That year returned to Portugal because of his father's death and entered Coimbra University Medical School where he graduated with distinction in 1957.
After one year of medical practice in Portugal, he returned to the United States to do Internship at St. Luke's Hospital, New Bedford, Massachusetts. Then completed his specialization in Internal Medicine (three years) at famous Lahey Clinic, Boston, Massachusetts.
Since 1963 was an Associate Member of the Bristol County Medical Center. Active Staff Member of Roger Williams’ Medical Center Hospital, one of the affiliated hospitals with Brown University Medical School. He was, for 21 years, Medical Director of the R. I. Veteran's Home in Bristol. Medical Director of the Portuguese Continental Union, the largest Portuguese-American organization in the East Cost of U. S. A.
Married to Sílvia Tavares Jorge: have two sons, Manuel and José. Two granddaughters, Victoria and Alexandra -- ( from Manuel’s); and one grandson, James and one granddaughter, Katelyn -- ( from José’s).
In addition to his medical practice, Dr. da Silva has been studying, for more than 50 years, the history of Dighton Rock inscriptions made by Miguel Corte Real in 1511. Proposed with original research that the first European Colony in New England was Portuguese. Has written many articles for Portuguese, Brazilian and American press including National Medical Magazines. Has given more than 408 lectures in Universities, Colleges, Historical Societies and has appeared on many radio and television programs educating the public on Portuguese-American history.
In 1971 published the book Portuguese Pilgrims and Dighton Rock, (sold out since 1976), which summarizes his original research in the history of the discovery of North America (Dighton Rock Museum: Mass Route 24, exit 10, ten miles north of Fall River).
In 1964 Co-founder of the Cultural Organization "The Knights of Corte Reais" being one of its past president.
In 1965 Founded the Portuguese-American Federation, Inc. being one of its past presidents.
Past President of the Portuguese-American Civic League of the State of Rhode Island.
In 1967 selected "Man of the Year" by the Seven Castles Club of Blackstone Valley for his civic and ethnic leadership.
In 1968, for his medial services to the Portuguese American Community he was awarded by Portugal the Decoration of Prince Henry the Navigator. This ceremony was held in Luanda, Angola, at the International Medical Meeting of AMELPO = Associação Médica de Lingua Portuguesa).
In 1970 initiated the weekly TV program "Portuguese Around Us" shown for 20 years every Sunday on Channel 6, New Bedford, Mass. Now the same program continues on Cable TV Full Channel Cable 52, in the Bristol County, for the last 11 years.
In 1971 was honored with the Outstanding Citizen Award by the International Institute of Providence “as a physician, ethnic leader, lecturer, researcher, historian and author”.
On June 10, 1972, received the honorary degree of Doctor of Humanities from Rhode Island College for the Publication of his book Portuguese Pilgrims and Dighton Rock.
In 1973 published, in Portugal, another book Os Pioneiros Portugueses e a Pedra de Dighton which contains advanced studies of his research concerning the Dighton Rock inscriptions.
In 1973 co-founded the association: “The Friends of Dighton Rock Museum” and its past president.
For four years was coordinator and moderator of the weekly television series "Os Portugueses" produced by R. I. Public Station Channel 36.
In 1974-1975 President of the Bristol County Medical Society.
Chief Marshal of 1975 Patriotic Fourth of July Parade, Bristol, R. I. The highest honor given to a citizen of Bristol.
In 1975, was moderator of the Sunday Radio Program “The Portuguese in New England" on WPRO-AM.
In 1978, founded the Portuguese-American Communications, Inc. and has been its president.
From 1978 to 1984 was moderator of the television series "Imagens de Portugal" on Channel 12 , Providence, R. I.
In 1984 published the American edition of a new book The Electricity of Love! and has given more than 100 lectures on the same subject.
In 1985 published the Portuguese edition of A Electricidade do Amor!
In the last few years has made many medical cable television programs, (questions and answers) for the Portuguese-Americans of New England and also similar series of medical programs for the Southeastern Massachusetts Health Planning and Development.
In 1985 received "The Family of the Year Award" from the Portuguese Continental Union of the U. S. A. (Lodge No. 54 Teófilo Braga).
In 1985-87 he was the president of the Bristol County Medical Center.
In 1986-1987 he was President of Rotary International Club of Bristol.
In 1987 received "Man of the Year Award", from The Prince Henry Club of Rhode Island.
In 1987, published the American and Portuguese editions of "The True Antilhas, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia".
In 1989 Published the American and Portuguese editions of "Columbus was 100% Portuguese!"
In 1991 published the American and Portuguese editions of "The Religious and Mythological Powers in the name of Cristóvão Colon".
In 1992 published the American and Portuguese editions of "The Pope Alexander VI and Cristofõm Colon".
In 1993 published the American and Portuguese edition of: “The First Queen of Bristol, Rhode Island, was 100% Portuguese!”
In 1994, published : “I made another discovery”. Original discovery of the Portuguese name “Cristofõm Colon” on the Second Papal Bull of May 4th, 1493.
On February 1995, started, every Thursday at 7:30 AM, (WHTB AM, Fall River, MA), a new weekly program of half hour duration, by telephone, live, entitled “Ask the Physician” , answering questions from the listeners and also explaining the latest discoveries in the field of Medicine.
On November 4, 1995, received the prestigious XII Peter Francisco Award, by the Portuguese Continental Union of the United States of America.
On October 8, 1996, received the Merit Award from the City of Vale de Cambra as outstanding emigrant of his hometown.
On September 28, 1996, was elected president of the “Portuguese-American Health Professional Association”, at the Third International Convention, held in Sintra, Portugal.
On October 1st, 1996, gave his lecture number 328, at the Portuguese Geographic Society in Lisbon Portugal, on “The Portuguese Inscriptions of Dighton Rock,” “The True Antilles” and “Columbus was 100% Portuguese”. On October 8th, 1996, gave his lecture No. 329, at the International Rotary Club of Barcelos, Portugal.
On November 15, 1996, gave his 330 Lecture, at the Town Hall of Berkley, (where Dighton Rock is located) entitled: “The last fifty years of the History of Dighton Rock 1946-1996”`.
On July 1997, started at the Portuguese Channel Cable TV, with studios in New Bedford, MA, a new weekly series of half hour duration, entitled “Medical Tribune”, interviewing various Portuguese and Brazilian Physicians to inform medically the large Portuguese Speaking Community of New England.
On April 26, 1998, received the First Distinction Honoris Causa from the Centennial Organization, Portuguese Beneficial Association Dom Luiz Filipe, at a banquet, Venus de Milo, Swansea, Massachusetts.
On May 18, 1998, it was incorporated in the City of Vale de Cambra, Portugal, an “Association called Dr. Manuel Luciano da Silva” for the purpose of building a Library–Museum contiguous to the house where he was born, in Cavião, Portugal.
On September 23, 1998, was reelected President of the "Portuguese-American Health Professional Association" in the Fifth International Convention, held in the City of Évora, Portugal.
On October 12, 1998, he retired from his medical practice at Bristol County Medical Center, where he worked as a partner for more than 35 years.
On October 13, 1998, gave his lecture No. 340 at the Public Library in Seekonk, about his research on the Portuguese inscriptions on Dighton Rock. And on November 2nd, 1998, gave lecture No. 341, at the Rectory of St. Bernard's Church, in Assonet, Massachusetts (Rev. Tim Goldrick), for the members of the Knights of Columbus.
On July 3rd,2000 he incorporated the “Academy of Codfish of New England, becoming its first president.
On October 29, 2000, gave his lecture No. 346, at the City Hall of Lagoa, Saint Miguel, Azores.
On June 12, 2001, the Library-Museum Dr. Manuel Luciano da Silva was solemnly inaugurated in Cavião, Vale de Cambra, north of Portugal. There are five albums with photographs of the buildings, and the official ceremonies in his website.
From June 2001 up to 2006 he continue to visit Portugal, twice a year, to give medical and historical lectures to increase the public interest for his Library-Museum. In the USA, despite being retired from his medial practice, he continued, as a public service, with his weekly radio programs (One hour, live, "Ask the Physician" ', and with his television weekly program, (30 minutes, entitled "Medical Tribune").
On May 20th, 2006, he and his wife launched their new book in Portuguese -- "Cristóvão Colon Colombo) was Portuguese!" , at the Clube Literário do Porto, concerning their investigations about the Portuguese nationality of the Navigator Cristóvão Colon (Columbus) and their other original Portuguese discoveries and colonizations in North America. They completed ten book launchings in Portugal within a month before returning to US. Their book in two weeks became a best seller in Portugal. Up to now - July 2007, has sold fourteen thousand copies!
Sixty two days after the publication of Portuguese edition of "Cristóvão Colon (Colombo) was Portuguese", Master Manoel de Oliveira, the oldest movie Director in the world still active ( he will be 99 years old on December 12, 2007), decided to adapt the same book to a movie. This production he called it "Cristóvão Colombo, O Enigma" - "Christopher Columbus, The Enigma" which had its first world premiere at the International Venice Film Festival, Italy, on September 6th, 2007. On September 7th the independent critics awarded Oliveira's film the Golden Medal on the 'Bisato D'Oro.'
On May 2007, he and his wife completed the American Edition of their new book “Cristóvão Colon (Columbus) was Portuguese!” which they have already copyright at the Library of Congress dated June 5th, 2007.
Up to July 2007, he has already given 408 illustrated lectures, free of charge, concerning the couples' historical discoveries in North America, such as Dighton Rock, Newport Tower, etc.

I., Dom Luiz Filipe Beneficial Association, Bristol Sports Club, etc.
Nasceu a 5 de Setembro de 1926, na aldeia de Cavião, Concelho de Vale de Cambra, Portugal. Frequentou a Escola Primária de Cavião, Leixões e Oliveira de Azeméis e completou o Curso Geral dos Liceus no Colégio de Oliveira de Azeméis.
Em 1946, emigrou para Brooklyn, um bairro da cidade de Nova Iorque, juntamente com a mãe e o irmão, para se juntar ao pai. Trabalhou na Westinghouse Electric International Company (no departamento dos correios) e depois como amanuense no Consulado Geral de Portugal, em Nova Iorque.
Em 1948 entrou na Universidade de Nova Iorque obtendo o bacharelato em Ciências Biológicas em 1952. No mesmo ano, por causa do falecimento do pai, regressou a Portugal e foi admitido na Universidade de Coimbra terminando o curso médico com distinção, em 1957.
Depois de exercer medicina um ano em Portugal, regressou aos Estados Unidos para fazer o internato no Saint Luke's Hospital, em New Bedford, Massachusetts. A seguir completou a especialização em Medicina Interna (três anos), na famosa Lahey Clinic de Boston.
Desde 1963 foi membro sócio do Centro Médico do Condado de Bristol, Rhode Island. Fez parte do corpo clínico activo do Roger Williams Medical Center, um dos hospitais afiliados com a Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Brown. Foi Director Médico, durante 21 anos, da Rhode Island Veteran's Home em Bristol. Foi também Médico-Chefe da União Portuguesa Continental, a maior organização luso-americana da Costa Leste dos Estados Unidos da América.
Casado com a professora Sílvia Tavares Jorge da Silva (professora), têm dois filhos: Manuel (nascido a 10 de Março de 1962) e José (nascido a 21 de Junho de 1964). Têm duas netas (do Manuel) e um neto e uma neta (do José) .
Além da sua grande prática clínica, o Dr. Luciano da Silva tem, durante mais de cinco décadas, investigado a história das inscrições da Pedra de Dighton, gravadas por Miguel Corte Real, em 1511. Demonstrou, com pesquisas originais, que a primeira colónia europeia na Nova Inglaterra foi portuguesa. Tem escrito sobre o assunto muitos artigos em português e inglês, publicados na América, Brasil e Portugal. Já realizou mais de 408 conferências com diapositivos coloridos em Universidades, Sociedades Históricas, Rotários, etc. e tem actuado em muitos programas de rádio e televisão, educando o grande público sobre a História Luso-Americana.
Consolidando mais de 20 anos de pesquisas sobre a descoberta da América do Norte pelos portugueses, publicou em 1971 a edição americana do livro "Portuguese Pilgrims and Dighton Rock" (esgotado desde 1976).
Em 1964 foi co-fundador da organização cultural "The Knights of Corte Reais", tendo sido já seu presidente.
Em 1965 foi co-fundador da Federação Luso-Americana tendo sido já seu presidente.
Entre 1965-67 foi presidente da Liga Cívica Luso-Americana do Estado de Rhode Island.
Em 1967 foi homenageado como "Homem do Ano" pelo Clube dos Sete Castelos devido às suas qualidades de liderança étnica e cívica.
Em 1968 foi homenageado pelo Governo Português com a Condecoração do Infante D. Henrique por ter organizado o Congresso Internacional de Medicina na Nova Inglaterra com a participação de médicos de língua portuguesa dos Estados Unidos, Portugal e Brasil. Recebeu esta condecoração em Luanda, Angola, na altura do Congresso Internacional da AMELPO = Associação Médica de Língua Portuguesa.
Em 1970 iniciou o programa dominical televisivo "Portuguese Around Us", (30 minutos) que foi transmitido durante 25 anos pelo Canal 6, de New Bedford. Presentemente está a ser produzido pelo Canal 52 do Condado de Bristol. Num total de 31 anos de transmissão semanal!
Em 1971 foi homenageado "Homem do Ano" pelo Instituto Internacional do Estado de Rhode Island, como "médico, lidador étnico, conferencista, pesquisador, historiador e autor".
No dia 10 de Junho de 1972, recebeu o grau de "Doutor em Humanidades Honoris Causa", do Colégio Universitário Estadual do Rhode Island pela publicação do seu livro "Portuguese Pilgrims and Dighton Rock".
Em 1973, publicou em Portugal, "Os Pioneiros Portugueses e a Pedra de Dighton" (Depositária: Brasília Editora, Porto). Esgotado.
Em 1973 foi co-fundador da “Associação dos Amigos do Museu da Pedra de Dighton”, sendo actualmente o seu presidente.
Durante quatro anos foi moderador e anfitrião do programa de televisão, semanal, intitulado "Os Portugueses" (30 Minutos) transmitido pela Estação Oficial do Estado de Rhode Island, Canal 36.
Em 1974-75 foi presidente da Sociedade Médica do Condado de Bristol, Rhode Island.
Em 1975 foi Mordomo (Chief Marshal) da grande Parada Patriótica de Bristol, Rhode Island. A homenagem mais elevada que um cidadão de Bristol pode receber.
Em 1975 foi moderador do programa dominical "Os Portugueses na Nova Inglaterra" na Estação de Rádio WPRO.

Em 1985 recebeu a homenagem – “Família do Ano” - da União Portuguesa Continental dos Estados Unidos (Sucursal No. 54 - Teófilo Braga).
Entre 1985-87 foi presidente da Corporação do Centro Médico do Condado de Bristol, Rhode Island.
Em 1986-1987 foi Presidente do Rotary Club de Bristol, Rhode Island,
Em 1987, publicou as edições americana e portuguesa de "As Verdadeira Antilhas: Terra Nova e Nova Escócia".
Em 1989 publicou as edições americana e portuguesa de "Colombo era 100% Português!"
Em 1991 foi o Marechal da Parada do Dia de Portugal, em West Warwick, no Estado de Rhode Island
Em 1991 publicou as edições americanas e portuguesas de "Os poderes religiosos e mitológicos contidos no nome Cristóvão Cólon".
Em 1992 publicou as edições americana e portuguesa de "O Papa Alexandre VI e Cristofõm Colon".
Em 1993, descobriu que a “A Primeira Rainha de Bristol, Rhode Island, era 100% Portuguesa”.
Em 1994, escreveu “Fiz mais uma descoberta!”. Descoberta original do nome escrito em português “Cristofõm Colon”, na Segunda Bula Papal de Alexandre VI, datada de 4 de Maio de 1493”.
Em Fevereiro de 1995, iniciou uma nova série de programas na rádio, de meia hora, ao vivo pelo telefone, no Programa “Despertar” da Estação WHTB da cidade de Fall River, (1400AM), intitulado “Perguntar ao Médico” tratando dos assuntos actuais da medicina.
Em 4 de Novembro de 1995, recebeu o prestigioso “XII Prémio Peter Francisco” da União Portuguesa Continental, no Viking Hotel, em Newport, Rhode Island.
Em 8 de Outubro de 1996, recebeu no Salão Nobre da Câmara Municipal de Vale de Cambra a Placa de Mérito “como emigrante exemplar que tem enaltecido o nome de Vale de Cambra no país e no mundo”.
Em 28 de Setembro de 1996, foi eleito presidente da “Portuguese-American Health Professional Association”, na Terceira Convenção Internacional realizada em Sintra, Portugal.
No dia primeiro de Outubro de 1996, realizou a sua conferência número 328, na Sociedade de Geografia de Lisboa, sobre “As Inscrições Portuguesas da Pedra de Dighton”, “As Verdadeiras Antilhas”, e “Colombo era 100% Português”. E a conferência No. 329, no Clube dos Rotários de Barcelos, em 8 de Outubro de 1996.
No dia 15 de Novembro de 1996, fez a sua conferência No. 330, no Salão Nobre da Vila de Berkley, (onde a Pedra de Dighton está localizada!), intitulada: “Os últimos 50 anos da História da Pedra de Dighton, 1946-1996”.
Em Julho de 1997, iniciou no Canal de Televisão por Cabo em Português, na Nova Inglaterra, com estúdios em New Bedford, Massachusetts, uma nova série semanal intitulada “Tribuna Médica”, com a duração de meia hora, entrevistando outros médicos em português com a finalidade de informar e educar a Comunidade Lusíada sobre os variados aspectos da medicina.
Em 26 de Abril de 1998, recebeu a Primeira "Distinção Honoris Causa" da Organização Centenária, Associação Portuguesa Beneficente Dom Luís Filipe, num banquete realizado no Venus de Milo, em Swansea, Massachusetts.
Em 18 de Maio de 1998, foi incorporada na Cidade de Vale de Cambra, uma Associação chamada Dr. Manuel Luciano da Silva, com a finalidade de criar uma Biblioteca-Museu contígua à casa onde ele nasceu, em Cavião, Portugal.
Em 23 de Setembro de 1998, foi re-eleito Presidente da "Portuguese American Health Professional Association", na Quinta Convenção Internacional que se realizou em Évora, Portugal.
No dia 12 de Outubro de 1998, reformou-se da prática clínica que exerceu durante mais de 35 anos no Centro Médico de Bristol, Rhode Island.
No dia 13 de Outubro de 1998, realizou a sua conferência no. 340, sobre as inscrições portuguesas da Pedra de Dighton, na Biblioteca Pública de Seekonk, Massachusetts. Fez a conferência No. 341, na Reitoria da Igreja de St. Bernard, em Assonet, MA. (Rev. Tim Goldrick), para os membros dos Knights of Columbus.
Depois de 1998, tem continuado a dar conferências em Portugal, nos Estados Unidos e Canadá e até esta data (2004) já realizou 400 conferências, todas pro bono.
No dia 3 de Julho de 2000, incorporou a “Academia do Bacalhau da Nova Inglaterra”, sendo o seu primeiro presidente.
No dia 12 de Junho de 2001, foi inaugurada solenemente a Biblioteca-Museu Dr. Manuel Luciano da Silva, em Cavião, Vale de Cambra. Já estão cinco álbuns de fotografias sobre os edifícios e a cerimónias oficiais. Ver a website
No dia 31 de Outubro de 2004, recebeu a "Condecoração da Cultura" da "Portuguese American Citizen Committe of Rhode Island", pelos muitos programas de rádio e televisão que tem realizado para informar a nossa gente sobre assuntos médicos, históricos e culturais.
Desde Junho de 2001 ate 2006 tem visitado Portugal duas vezes por ano para realizar conferências médicas e históricas para alertar o público para o valor cultural da sua Biblioteca Museu em Cavião, Vale de Cambra. Nos Estados Unidos, apesar de estar reformado da sua clínica médica, continua a fazer os seus programa semanais na rádio ao vivo -- “Perguntar ao Médico”, uma hora sem anúncios -- e também o programa de televisão , 30 minutos “Tribuna Médica”
No dia 20 de Maio de 2006, conjuntamente com a esposa Sílvia” fizeram o primeiro lançamento do seu novo livro, no Clube Literário do Porto, Portugal, intitulado “Cristóvão Colon (Colombo) era Português” editado pela QuidNovi de Matosinhos. Num mês fizeram dez lançamentos em Portugal antes de regressarem a América. Este livro trata da nacionalidade portuguesa do navegador e ainda de várias descobertas originais histórias que o casal fez a respeito das descobertas e colonização portuguesa na América do Norte. Tornou-se em poucas semanas um best seller em Portugal , Açores e Madeira. Até Julho de 2007 já se venderam mais de catorze mil exemplares!
Sessenta de dois dias depois da publicação do livro “Cristóvão Colon (Colombo) era Português”, o Mestre Manoel de Olivença, o cineasta mais idóneo do mundo no activo -- vai fazer 99 anos em 12 de Dezembro de 2007- adaptou o mesmo livro ao cinema com o titulo “Cristovão Colombo, O Enigma”. Este filme teve a sua primeira estreia mundial no Festival Internacional de Veneza, na Itália, no dia 6 de Setembro de 2007. No dia seguinte, 7 de Setembro de 200, recebeu a Medalha de Ouro – “Bisato D’Oro”- pela critica independente, sendo considerado o melhor filme num grupo de 24 produções cinematográficas.
Em Maio de 2007, conjuntamente com a esposa acabaram a Edição Americana do seu livro histórico sobre o Navegador tendo já assegurado o seu Copyright na Biblioteca do Congresso Americano com a data de 5 de Junho de 2007.
Até Julho de 2007, já realizou 408 conferências, todas pro bono, com diapositivos coloridos sobre as suas investigações históricas.
