The Portuguese Discovery Monument at Brenton Point State Park

was a gift from Portugal to the American people, in 1988.

The Compass Rose here at Brenton Point State Park, in Newport, Rhode Island,
is a modern replica of the one at the Portuguese Nautical School, at Sagres, southern Portugal.

Please note the pillars,  the tall land marker that has engraved the
names of the famous navigators and the world sphere.

This world sphere represents the three fourths  of the world that  the Portuguese navigators discovered. The State of Rhode Island did a very good job last Spring  cleaning up the entire monument and park.
