Dighton Rock's Sister

  The geologists tell us that in the last million years the earth has  had several periods of getting warm and getting cold or glacial. These changes are confirmed by the geological studies of the various  geological layers.

The reasons for these periods of warm and cold  were caused  by the changes in the sun and also by the increased activities of volcanoes that threw  lots of ashes into the atmosphere interfering with the effect of the sun warming up the earth in a normal fashion.

The last glacial period ended  eleven thousand years ago.   Until then, the north hemisphere was covered by very thick layer of ice until the latitude of New York , U. S. A. ,  Lisbon , Portugal and Peking , China . The earth started getting warmer and the thick plaques of ice begun to melt away causing giant avalanches  which took in front of them huge objects such as huge stones.

These huge boulders  can be found in  New England  coming from  Canada ,  and  in central Europe   coming from Scandinavian countries.  It was this phenomenon that created the Cape Cod with such gigantic debris.

Dighton Rock , in Berkley, MA is one of those boulders. It is upside-down and its edges  are rounded due to the fact that it rolled down hill, until it stopped, 11 thousand years ago,   on  the left margin of the Taunton River.

This rock has a weight of approximately 50 tons. It's located near route 6, close to the location
 of the statue of Prince Henry the Navigator which has been on display to the public since 1940.

But in the City of Fall River, only ten miles away, we can find a sister of Dighton Rock . It is also a boulder but it seems that it must have had a much longer trip because it is  more round than Dighton Rock ! 

Whenever you have a chance pay a visit to these two monuments  because they both give us an actual  message in case the earth is getting warmer again, the ice caps that exist now in  the north pole might start melting away, and these will cause  an increase of the sea level up to 200 feet all around the world! Image what it will happen to all the islands and all the big cities in the world! They all will be submerged!!!  That is the danger of the green house effect due to the increase of the carbon dioxide! We better start now running to the mountains!
