Manuel Luciano da Silva, M. D. inducted into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame, on May First, 2010
He was born on September 5, 1926, in the village of Cavião, Vale de Cambra, in Continental Portugal. After completing high school in Portugal, he immigrated to Brooklyn, New York City, in January of 1946, with his mother and brother to join his father, who was an American citizen. He intensively learned the English language and in 1948 entered the Washington Square College, New York University, graduating in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He had to return to Portugal that year because of his father's death and enrolled at the Coimbra University Medical School where he graduated with distinction in 1957. He returned to the United States and did his Internship at St. Luke's Hospital, New Bedford, Massachusetts. Next he completed his specialization in Internal Medicine (three years) at the famous Lahey Clinic, Boston, Massachusetts. In 1963, he became an Associate Member of the Bristol County Medical Center, where he remained practicing Internal Medicine for four decades.
On September 17th, 1960 he married teacher Sílvia Tavares Jorge. They have two sons, Manuel and José and four grandchildren.
In addition to his medical practice, Dr. da Silva has been researching, for more than 50 years, the history of the Dighton Rock inscriptions made by Miguel Corte Real in 1511. He has published eight books, including the “Portuguese Pilgrims and Dighton Rock” in 1971. He has fourteen copyrights registered in the Library of the Congress. In 2006, he published the co-authored book with his wife, “Christopher Columbus was Portuguese!” This book was adapted into a movie which won a Gold Medal, the Bisoto D’Oro, (Gold Medal), at the International Film Festival in Venice, Italy, on September 8, 2008.
Concerning cultural and humanitarian activities, Dr. Da Silva has an unique curriculum. For more than four decades he has, as a public service, hosted weekly radio and television programs, in English and Portuguese, informing the general public on medical matters. He has also been involved in campaigns concerning oncology, heart and even polio. Dr. Da Silva helped many newly arrived immigrants by not charging them for his medical services while they were adjusting to the American society.
Dr. Da Silva’s perseverance and enthusiasm, along with his wife, encouraged good will on both sides of the Atlantic which resulted in the creation of two museums, one in the USA – Dighton Rock Museum – and the other in Portugal – Library-Museum Dr. Manuel Luciano da Silva, located in the village where the Doctor was born. They are the only two Portuguese immigrants ever to inspire in their lifetime the creation of two museums that were built for and dedicated to the Portuguese Diaspora.

O médico Dr. Manuel Luciano da Silva, de Bristol, RI, foi nomeado para o Hall of Fame do Estado de Rhode Island e vai ser admitido nesse clube de famosos do Estado Oceano no dia 1 de Maio.
O médico e investigador histórico será o primeiro luso-americano a entrar na galeria das figuras a quem os directores do Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame reconhecem ter contribuído para o prestígio e reconhecimento de Rhode Island, ou terem feito contributos importantes para a sua história e cultura.
O cerimonial da entrega dos instrumentos desta distinção vai ter lugar em 1 de Maio, às 7 horas da noite, no grande auditório da “Rhode-on-the-Pawtuxet”. Para o grande banquete cada bilhete custará 75 dólares por pessoa.
Juntamente com o Dr. Luciano da Silva, serão também admitidos em 1 de Maio no Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame o Dr. Robert Ballard (o oceanólogo que localizou os destroços dos navios Titanic e Bismark), Kathleen S. Connel, Susan L. Farmer, Malcom J. Grear, Chris van Allsburg, Dr. Joseph E. Cannon, Yat K. Tow e George A. Willey.
Os candidatos devem ser nascidos em Rhode Island ou ter fixado a residência naquele estado ou ter ganho a reputação de que desfrutam enquanto residiam no estado.
O Dr. Patrick Conley, presidente do Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame, lembrou que “entre vários milhões de pessoas que já nasceram no Estado de Rhode Island, que viveram, trabalharam e que adquiriram reputação nesse estado apenas 601 foram admitidas naquele Panteão da Fama”.
Sob proposta de Halsey Herreshoff, presidente do mundialmente conhecido Museu Marítimo Herreshoff, o nome do Dr. Luciano da Silva foi aprovado por unanimidade pelos 25 membros da direcção.
Fundado em 1965, ano em que entraram para esta galeria de ilustres 10 nomes ligados à vida ou história de Rhode Island, o Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame todos os anos tem vindo a reconhecer o contributo de naturais ou residentes ou antigos residentes para a história colectiva . Em 2008, entraram para a esta galeria nove nomes, entre os quais o do senador federal Jack Reed.
Todos os membros do Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame têm a sua fotografia exposta no Rhode Island Historiacal Society Museum of Rhode Island History, localizado em 110 Benevolent Street, em Providence.
O Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame é uma organização gémea do Heritage Harbor Museum. Após a abertura deste museu ele tornar-se-à a residência permanente dos retratos de todos os que foram distinguidos com a admissão no Panteão da Fama de Rhode Island.

A selecção do Dr. Luciano da Silva foi baseada na forma excelente como ele exerceu Medicina Interna durante quatro décadas, mas também devido às suas descobertas históricas originais. O médico luso-americano já possui catorze “copyrights” na Biblioteca do Congresso em Washington e já publicou oito livros.
O último livro intitulado “Cristóvão Colombo era Português” coadjuvado pela esposa Sílvia foi adaptado ao cinema pelo cineasta Português Manoel de Oliveira cuja produção ganhou a Medalha de Outro no Festival Internacional de Veneza, Itália em 8 de Setembro de 2008.

“Portuguese Pilgrims and Dighton Rock” em 1971, seguindo-se depois o popular “The Electricity of Love!”Uma das facetas a que os responsáveis pelo Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame prestam muita atenção são as actividades humanitárias, sociais e culturais dos vários candidatos, um campo em que não foi difícil ao Dr. Luciano da Silva merecer consenso dos 25 directores.
Há mais de quarenta anos que este médico de Bristol tem vindo a fazer, gratuitamente, palestras e programas na rádio e na televisão, tanto em inglês como em português, sobre assuntos médicos, históricos e culturais. Além disso tem tomado parte activa em muitas campanhas de bem-fazer nesta região da Nova Inglaterra, nas áreas oncológicas, cardíaca e até de pólio.
Parabéns ao Dr. Luciano da Silva assim como à sua família, pela grande honra que lhe vai ser conferida e que é motivo de orgulho para todas as comunidades portuguesas.
