"The Forgotten Portuguese"

By Manuel Mira

"The Forgotten Portuguese" is a new book written by  Manuel Mira. Published by the Portuguese-American Historical Research Foundation, a North Caroline non-profit organization.  The Author has painstakingly done a lengthy research on the attempts of one particular group to settle in North America since the early 15th century.

The Portuguese people are one of the oldest European groups of settlers, probably the first one to arrive in this continent and permanently settle among the natives in a peaceful manner. This book follows their quest for better life in the New World and of other groups who consider themselves Portuguese, such as the Melungens of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Caroline, Tennessee and Virginia. The Author, Manuel Mira,  was born in Portugal and  lives in the Appalachians. He was  been able to identify with Appalachians, a forgotten group of people living in the mountains.

His book also presents several aspects of American and Portuguese History. It covers all other Portuguese voyages and settlements in North America since the XV Century.  It has a very extensive bibliography and  many references  to many Portuguese  discoverers and explorers  that the general public does not know of their Portuguese connection. In my estimation "The Forgotten Portuguese" is like a rhapsody   of the Portuguese  with concentration in North America. No library on Americana will be complete without this valuable book. It brings together all the Portuguese discoveries and explorations.

Because I firmly believe in the contents of  "The Forgotten Portuguese",  I recommend to the Board of Directors of the  cultural-historical  organization of Bristol, Rhode Island,  "The Knights of Corte Reais", to buy one dozen of copies of the "Forgotten Portuguese"  and  offer them to several public, high school and University libraries in the  State of Rhode Island.  Joseph Mello, president of "Knights of the Corte Reais", made,  last month,  the first  presentation  of a copy of "The Forgotten Portuguese" to Joan Prescott, Bristol Librarian of the Rogers Free Library. This book is now available to the general public.
