Esta manhã , (6 de Set., 2002), ouvi no programa radiofónico “A Voz do Emigrante” de Fall River, uma notícia maravilhosa, como não ouvia há muitos anos.

Uma Senhora de nome Gomes que nasceu em Cabo Verde e imigrou para os Estados Unidos  há vários anos, acaba de se naturalizar cidadã americana!

Esta senhora  que passou miséria em Cabo Verde, sempre sonhou em vir para os Estados Unidos.  Finalmente conseguiu realizar o seu  sonho, para dar  melhor oportunidade aos seus filhos aqui na America.

Mas  quís tornar-se cidadã  americana  porque realmente ama verdadeiramente este país que a acolheu   de braços abertos e por isso desejou muito sinceramente ser cidadã desta grande nação!

Eu se fosse director dum jornal iria encher a página inteira da frente do jornal com a fotografia desta nova americana para servir de exemplo aos nossos imigrantes portugueses, cabo-verdianos, angolanos, brasileiros, etc.,  para se tornarem também cidadãos americanos. 

São  com notícias deste género que eu iria informar a nossa boa gente, em vez de gastar tempo e papel em notícias  de roubos, de assassínios, de drogas e de todas as variedades de crimes.

Parece que os meios  de comunicação preferem tornarem mais célebres os bandidos e os piores elementos  da sociedade mundial, do que pôr ênfase nas coisas boas.

É  por isso que os noticiários actuais  são verdadeiras poluições, que eu procuro sempre evitar. 

Prefiro ler os jornais e as revistas  onde eu  posso, rapidamente,  seleccionar os artigos que quero ler.

This morning,  (Sept. 6, 2002),  I heard on the radio entitled “The Voice of the Emigrant), from Fall River,  a marvelous news, as I had not heard in many years.

A lady by the name Mrs. Gomes, who was born in Cape Verde Island, came to the United States several years ago and just obtained her American Citizenship Papers!

This lady confessed that the was very poor while in Cape Verde, but finally was able to realize her dream of coming to U. S.,  to give a better opportunity to her children here in America!

She stated also that  she wanted to become American Citizen because she really loves this country because it opened its arms to receive her family. 

If I were the director of a Portuguese newspaper in America, I would fill the entire front page of the newspaper with a photo of this  new American citizen,  praising her,  using her example for other emigrants to became also citizens of this great country.

It is  with news like this one—stressing the positive -- that I would give to my readers instead of spending my time and space on news on  robberies, assassinations, drugs, and  all varieties of criminology.

It seems to me that  all members of the media prefer to make more known  the bandits, the terrorists, and the worst members of the world society, instead of putting emphasis on the good things. 

This is the reason why I avoid,  as much as I can,  to see and hear the  regular news, because they are,  in reality,  true pollution!

I prefer reading the newspapers and magazines because this way I am able to select, quickly, the articles that I want  to read.
