Dear Doctor,

I have received your letter, somewhat belatedly, and must apologize for my great delay in replying. I am aged eighty, in poor heath, and at this moment under great strain.

A few weeks ago my aged wife entered hospital for a laminectomy operation. The operation was not successful, and she has now returned home as a paraplegic in a wheelchair.

So after some weeks of strain and hospital visiting I have now become a 24-hours per day wheelchair attendant (I have no children or other support) and you can understand that my correspondence is now weeks behind.

I deeply appreciate your eulogistic evaluation of my work. It was very elattering . At the same time, I must say that my book has been highly successful. The president of  Portugal has bestowed on me one rank of  Comendador da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique – an honor I share with you.

My book is studied in the schools in Australia, and is now in its sixth reprint. Very many of the honors have come its way. On  25th February a Padrão, the gift of the Portuguese Government, will be unveiled at Mendonça’s turn-around point a Warrnambool.

As I show on pages 18 and 49-51, I am very interested in the descobertas pré-colombianas, on which subject you are so expert; and when my wife’s illness and other storms permit I shall digest your pamphlets – and any other writings,

(see flap coverlet)

that you  care to send me – and comment on them at greater length than in this hurried note.

If your Federation cares to send a telegram or other message of  good will to the Portuguese Australians on the Padrão unveiling, address it to The Mayor lf the City of Warrnambool, Warrnambool, 3280, Victoria, Australia.

 Yours sincerely
 Kenneth Gordon McIntire.
