My Enemy Number one!
By Manuel Luciano da Silva, Medical Doctor
Every leader has admirers, but has also enemies!
What kind of man is Onésimo?
Onésimo is a public figure because he is a professor of a famous
university and is also
a moderator of television program in the Portuguese Channel in New
Bedford, Massachusetts, USA
I was informed that Onésimo, Professor at Brown University, for many years, has been saying bad things about me, especially to the authorities in the Azores, Madeira and even Continental Portugal and has also belittled my original historical discoveries to the university professors in the same three regions, including my eight books.
Onésimo has also for the past 30 years depreciated the Portuguese Theory of Dighton Rock even though he has been a Portuguese immigrant in New England for more than 30 years, and he has NEVER visited the Dighton Rock Museum.
It was Professor Edmund Delabarre (Professor of Psychology) of Brown University who in 1918 discovered the inscriptions made by Miguel Corte Real in 1511 on the face of Dighton Rock. Onésimo being a Prof. at Brown University, he should embrace, for his own good, the Portuguese Theory, but not so, he has been instead a terrible enemy of the Portuguese Theory! Why? I do not know!
Gaspar Corte Real and his bother Miguel Corte Real were both Portuguese navigators who were born in City of Angra do Heroísmo, in the Island of Terceira where there is now a large American Base on the same island. If these both Corte Real were native Azoreans, how come the Azorean immigrants who live in North America do not embrace the historical meaning of Dighton Rock? The Corte Real were the first discovers and the first colonizes of New England!
But because of Onésimo’s influence, the Azorean-Americans do not like the Dighton Rock, because they figure that if Onésimo dislikes the Dighton Rock and he is a professor at a famous University he must be a wise guy, an intellectual, and they choose to believe Onésimo!
Now we are going to demonstrate with DOCUMENTATION that Onésimo is a BIG SHIT, who has been for years DECEIVING EVERYONE!
We have to remove his mask so he can loose all his superiority complex. He has to be reduced to ZERO, which is the place where he belongs!
Onésimo’s act of malice against Dr. Luciano da Silva
Let us examine what Onésimo did lately.
Onésimo is a member of Board of Directors of PALCUS (Portuguese-American Leadership Council of the United States) and I found out that Engineer Manuel Mira, author of the book -- “The Portuguese Making of America – for the past few years has recommended me to one of the annual PALCUS’ honorees.
Manuel Mira became upset because his recommendation was never approved and he requested from the President of PALCUS why?
The president decided to send Mr. Mira a copy of the e-mail he had received from Onésimo blocking my nomination for an award. The president decided to send the same e-mail to all the members of the nominating committee.
Here is the e-mail that Onésimo wrote and that Mr. Mira was kind enough to send me by Internet:

Enclosed I am sending you a copy of Onésimo’s e-mail for your own information.

Here is the e-mail Onésimo wrote and sent to the Directors of PALCUS:
Dear PALCUS Board members,
First of all, I am a democrat and, if PALCUS wants to honor Dr. Luciano da Silva, it has all the right to do so. I will simply register my dissent and will do absolutely nothing else to oppose it. But below are the reasons for my opposition.
Fully cognizant of the fact that this e-mail may be made public, I state that even though Dr. da Silva may truly believe in what he advocates, I could add that so did many people who burned others at the stake during the Inquisition. Honesty in itself is not justification enough for our actions.
Dr. da Silva is a vociferous defender of historical theses that have NO support in the worldwide community of historians (and this includes the PORTUGUESE community of professional historians), the experts who, I guess, deserve some credit, if not individually, at least as a group. Not one of them supports his views.
I must remind you of the fact that even though Dr. da Silva talks about his "books", except for the most recent one, which conflates all his previous pamphlets ( I wrote "pamphlets") thanks to an amazing editorial a job of by the editors of a press (I will spare you the details, but they are telling), he has written nothing more than amateur, remarkably unprofessional pamphlets that, in spite of his constant screaming, shouting, and attacking, have attracted nothing but disdain from all historians here in the US and everywhere else, including Portugal
I have been on the receiving end of the wrath of Dr. da Silva, the kind of treatment he gives to those who oppose his views. I could go on at length on the matter, but I will not. I have given up on him since, a long time ago, I tried to engage him in scholarly debate. He could not handle it because he is a fanatic (I wrote "fanatic") who follows no rules of order accepted by the international community of scholars and who thinks nothing of using the most unethical (I wrote "unethical") means of destroying the reputation of those who oppose his views. I have proof of this for those who are willing to take a look. One either accepts as TRUTH what he dictates, or one is doomed. He dared to write and to publish in a newspaper an indictment of the most famous Portuguese historian of the discoveries, Professor Luís de Albuquerque, of the University of Coimbra and of the National Commission for the Commemoration of the Portuguese Discoveries, just a few days after his death, in which he expressed his joy at his entrance into hell. I have copies of the newspaper.
If PALCUS wants to honor Dr. da Silva, PALCUS will be applauding obscurantism, fanaticism, blind nationalism as well as lending support to those who readily associate those and lots of other unsavory traits with the word "Portuguese" in the United States. You may wish to continue seeing them attached to us. I, as a proud Portuguese, wish to register my dissent. Best regards,
Onésimo Almeida

After reading the above letter I decided to investigate Onésimo.
So I went into the website of Brown University to find out the qualifications of Onésimo. I want to see the cadastre of this S. O. B.
By reading Onésimo’s biography as it is appears on Brown University website, I discovered this amazing information:
Onésimo does NOT have ANY university degree in the Portuguese Language, nor in the Portuguese Literature!
He does not have a Bachelor's degree, nor a Master's degree, neither a PhD in Portuguese Language and Portuguese Literature!!!
How come Onésimo has been teaching -- and displays all over the place his title as a Professor of Portuguese and Portuguese Literature -- WITHOUT having any university degree to be able to teach such subjects ???
This is indeed a very mysterious situation!
Now let us take a look at Onésimo’s Biography as it appears on the University website:

Biography:
Onésimo Teotónio Almeida was born in S. Miguel, Azores, in 1946. He graduated from the Portuguese Catholic University, Lisbon, in 1972.
He received his MA (1977) and PhD (1980), both in Philosophy, at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, where he has been teaching Portuguese Cultural and Intellectual History since 1975, and as a Full Professor since 1991. From 1992 to 2003 he was Chair of the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies.
Please note again that Onesimo has a Master and a PhD degree in Philosophy at Brown University.
And he states he has been teaching Portuguese and Portuguese Literature and also Intellectual History! What in hell is Intellectual History?.
With these official findings I decided to write a letter to the President of the Brown University which I mailed her on February 15, 2010.
Here is a copy of may letter to the President :

Dear President Simmons:
Last year I learned (for the first time) that over the years I was frequently nominated for special honor by PALCUS (Portuguese-American Leadership Council of the United States) but each nomination was opposed by your Professor Onésimo Almeida of Brown University. Why Professor Almeida went out of his way to show such animus to me is a mystery (see enclosed his letter to PALCUS board members).
He states that the “worldwide community of historians” do not agree with my historical findings and interpretations, yet not one of these historians has written poison-pen letters disparaging me for the purpose of preventing my receiving some honor or award. Professor Almeida’s conduct is unseemly and unworthy of a professor from our venerable Brown University.
Yet strangely I feel some kinship with Professor Almeida because he too is an amateur in Portuguese language and literature. Dr. Almeida does not have ANY university degree in Portuguese language and literature! After his studies at the Portuguese Catholic University (Lisbon), he earned his MA and PhD degrees in Philosophy at Brown University. With these degrees from Brown University, how he transformed himself from a PhD in philosophy to a teacher of Portuguese Language and Literature is quite a mystery!
Even before Onésimo Almeida became an immigrant in USA, I received on June 10, 1972, a Doctor of Humanities Degree from Rhode Island College because I published as a historian-epigraphist the book Portuguese Pilgrims and Dighton Rock. (Copy of this book exists in the Main Brown Library).
Since then I have published eight books and have fourteen copyrights registered with the Library of the Congress. The eighth book co-authored by my wife Silvia, Christopher Columbus was Portuguese, was adapted into a movie which won the Gold Medal at the International Film Festival in Venice, Italy, on September 8th, 2008. I am enclosing a copy of this book, as our gift to the Brown University Main Library, in honor of Professor Edmund Delabarre of Brown University who was the first scientist to decipher in 1918 the original Portuguese inscriptions engraved on Dighton Rock.
Because of these and various other achievements, I have been selected as one of this year’s inductees into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame and on May 1st, 2010, I will receive this highest civil honor in the State of Rhode Island. ( enclosed you will find a copy of the letter from Dr. Patrick Conley, President of the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame).
Whatever may be the bitter frustration or insecurity plaguing Dr. Almeida, certainly he should curb his most ugly and ungenerous propensities. You will no doubt tell me that Dr. Almeida enjoys the cherished academic freedom to express himself as he wishes, but this same freedom allows members of the Brown Community to denounce Professor Almeida.
Once the Portuguese-American community learns that Professor Almeida has been teaching Portuguese Literature at the world famous Brown University WITHOUT having a university degree in Portuguese, they will, without a doubt, think that this has been a shameful situation!
Respectfully,
Manuel Luciano da Silva, M. D.

The president answered my letter 17 days later. Here is her letter:

Now after the letter from the President of the Brown University to Dr. Da Silva, Onésimo has to go before the Director of ALL Faculties at Brown University and explain to him WHY he wrote such defamatory e-mail against Dr. Luciano Da Silva.
My letter to the President of Brown University is not going to do any good to Onésimo.
What kind of University professor is Onésimo that stoops so low by spending time to write a letter filled with malice about a compatriot of the same ethnic group?
Onésimo should be expelled from Brown University. He should be thrown into the street for him to loose all his superiority complex, because he has become a shame to all the Portuguese Americans in this country.
On the best opportunity I will place all this information on my website, in English and Portuguese, for everyone to see the facts about this IMPOSTOR.

Dear Board Members:
I share with you an email I received during the weekend (I believe, because I found it in the SPAM basket)
This is not what I was waiting, but somewhat not totally unexpected. And just when I thought that PALCUS was turning the corner.
Frustration is setting in my mind…

Dear all,
I read the material. Except for the impact it will have among Dr. da Silva’s followers in the Portuguese community, the letter will have no impact at all. I have tenure and not even the President can stop me from expressing my views. Academic work is judged by our peers -- nationally and internationally. One of my most recent articles, actually showing how the Portuguese were ahead in matters of science during the maritime discoveries, appeared in a collective book published by Stanford University Press (as you can imagine, not as well known as Dr. da Silva’s own Vanity Press – Dr. Da Silva’s books are self-published). I am his # 1 enemy because nobody else bothers paying attention to what he writes. At least I read his stuff. Everything. And he is so good with the facts that he keeps claiming I never visited the Dighton Rock Museum. Even on that one he is wrong. But read him and you would imagine that he is the well-known scholar being invited everywhere to speak and I am the “…. “ four letter word he claims I am.
Again, do not worry and just let it be, as I will. Since 1981 I had not spoken on the matter. And I stand by everything I said on my letter.
Best,
onésimo

My refutation to Onesimo’s response:
I do not need any tenure to defend myself… I have that right by the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights of the America Constitution.
By the answers that Onesimo gives he does NOT refute any of my accusations that he does not have any university degrees to teach Portuguese and Portuguese Literatures, how come Brown University allows him to teach such subjects ?
Onesimo does not reveals who were his "godfather" or "godmother" who got him in the Portuguese Brazilian Departments! Big mystery!
Onésimo on his statement even reveals arrogance and omnipotence in relation to the President of the University when he says that she cannot prohibit him of expressing his views, because he has tenure. He reminds me of the Portuguese song: “I do not leave this place, and nobody can get me out of here!”
Onésimo prefers to use the “Conspiracy of Silence” which is typical of the university professors.
He prefers and recommends that everything should stay the same, so he can continue to benefit the same privileges from PALCUS and from Brown University.
The Directors of PALCUS should demand that Onésimo resigns from the Committee and the same request should be applied to other members that were connivent with Onésimo, otherwise keeping the status quo will damage the national public relation of PALCUS.
Onésimo confesses on his response that he has read all that I have written. He must have read also all my articles on my website. That is very good because in the future he will have many more articles to read and I want to alert him now that some future articles will be indeed acerbic.
I want to take this public opportunity to confess that I NEVER read anything that Onesimo writes because a long time ago I verified that his articles have no heads or tails, are a mixture of stupid thoughts that nobody understands what he wants to convey! His articles are intellectuals masturbations! I do not have any time to put up with Onésimo fantasies!
I was elected to be admitted into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame, and on May First, 2010, I will receive such distinction which is considered the Highest Civil Honor in the State of Rhode Island!
As a contrast, I would like to raise the following questions:
How many books published by Onésimo were sold out? ZERO.
How many historical Portuguese-American documents did Onésimo decipher in an original form? ZERO.
How many books written by Onésimo were adapted to the cinema? ZERO.
How many books written by Onésimo merit him a Honorary Degree by and American University? ZERO.
There is no doubt that scientifically Onésimo is equal to a BIG ZERO.
All universities in the world have two kinds of Professors: “cream” and “crap”, there is, “Cream” and “Shit”!
If my website has been very popular, from now on the number of its visitors will augment much more, because a lot of people will want to find out the truth about this scandalous that puts to shame not only the Brown University, but Azores, Madeira, Continental Portugal and of course all the Portuguese Americans in North America. They want to find out what will be the outcome of this university impostor.

Warning to all the readers of this article: The truth always comes to the water surface! Onésimo, to whom I never paid any attention, attacked me with malice and with a strong intent of assassinating my character! Now he has to suffer the consequences in public! I will thank you very much if you recommend this article to your family members and your friends, so they will also know the truth! If you want to send me your commentaries about this matter write to me at: I want to ASSURE you that I will NOT place your MESSAGE, nor your NAME on my website. Up to now NOBODY has had the COURAGE to expose PUBLICALY, Onésimo, the IMPOSTOR!
This way he will get, by the general public,
