Dear President Simmons:

I want to call your attention to a great Professor of the Brown University: Edmund Burke Delabarre who taught Psychology and was Chairman of the Department for many years. He died in 1944 at the age of 84.

Besides his specialty he made the great discovery of deciphering the original inscriptions on Dighton Rock situated in Berkley, Massachusetts – only 27 miles from Brown University Campus.

He never received any form of homage from Brown University even though he has been honored publicly by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Enclosed you will find two printed articles from my website,  together with several photographs explaining his unique discovery and also his contributions to solve the mystery of this famous American  monument.

There are  in the main Rockefeller Library  of Brown University copies of my  two books concerning  the History of Dighton Rock: “Portuguese Pilgrims  and Dighton Rock”, 1971 and   “Os Pioneiros Portugueses  e a Pedra de Dighton (Portuguese Edition), 1974.  My website has much more updated information.

I hope after your receive these materials you will  choose in  what form Delabarre’s example as a persistent researcher should be transmitted to all the teaching staff and even all the alumni. Brown University deserves to get the full credit of this outstanding investigator.

It was with great pleasure that I read your fantastic plans for the Brown Medical School. Congratulations!

Thanking you very much for your attention, I remain with best regards.

Respectfully,

Manuel Luciano da Silva, M. D.

Dear Dr. da Silva:

Thank you for sending me such comprehensive information about your study of the Dighton Rock in Berkley, Mass., and the contributions that Professor Edmund Burke Delabarre made by deciphering the original inscriptions.

Faculty at Brown and its peers institutions are typically honored by their professions for their accomplishments, not by the University  explicitly. However, we are always happy to have a full accounting of what those accomplishments are, so I am sharing a copy of your letter with the Department of Psychology, the Department of Geology, and the University Archives at the John Hay Library.

I appreciate your taking the time to demonstrate the significance of Professor Delabarre's investigation and discovery. My pride in the caliber of Brown's faculty extends not just to our current professors but  to all those who have come before them, and Professor Delabarre provides a wonderful example.

My very best wishes to you.

Sincerely,

Ruth J., Simmons
