The Power Of A Book! By Manuel Luciano da Silva, M. D. |
|
Voltaire said: “The pen is mightier than the sword!” |
In May 1971, I published my book “ Portuguese Pilgrims and Dighton Rock”.
In 1974, Mr. Anthony Marques, from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, finished the construction of a new Hotel in Oliveira de Azeméis, North of Portugal, 25 miles south of the big city of Oporto and inspired on my book about the history of Dighton Rock he decided to name his hotel: “ ROCK OF DIGHTON”.
This is the only hotel in Portugal that has a rotating restaurant on the top. It is today a four star hotel!

The "Rock of Dighton"
hotel . |

This is the House of Corte Reais, related to Miguel Corte Real, who inscribed his name and the Portuguese National symbols on the face of Dighton Rock, in 1511.This building is across the street from the “Rock of Dighton Hotel”.
See if you can detect the statue of a naked man, on the left side of this photo. It is dedicated to the Portuguese writer Ferreira de Castro who wrote the famous book: “The Emigrants", which has been translated into more than fifty different languages!
This Ferreira de Castro has a Library-Museum, in Ossela, which is only six kilometers (4 miles) from here. It is twelve kilometers (8 miles) from here to the Library Museum with my name, in Cavião , Vale de Cambra.
In the Museum of Oliveira de Azeméis there is a fiberglass Replica of the face of the Dighton Rock made by Edward Medeiros of Bristol, R. I., and several other Portuguese-Americans.
