Dr. da Silva:

Thank you for your brilliant presentation that was very well received by our large audience (the largest for any Carlton Pinheiro lecture thus far). I admire your skill, attention to research detail, and tenacity. I should be pleased for a coffee time with you and Mrs. da Silva. Best for me would be sometime on Sept 21 (could also make afternoon of Sept 22).

When we meet, in addition to discussion of the portraits and other matters of mutual interest, please provide me your CV as assistance to me in nominating you for induction into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame. Bristolians already there are two of the Haffenreffers, Genl. Ambrose Burnside, Dr. Patrick Conley, Nathanael G. Herreshoff and myself.

You are fully deserving but we must convey your doctoring, assistance to new American residents from Portugal, Dighton Rock, other researches, publications, TV programs etc. I look forward to seeing you.

Halsey Herreshoff, President

And Mr. Joseph Brum, electrician and  a proven leader of the Portuguese-American Community in Bristol, sent this letter to the Editor of Bristol Phoenix:

Dear  Editor:

Congratulations for publishing such excellent article concerning the medical and historical achievements of Dr. Manuel Luciano da Silva of our town. (Dr. da Silva to talk on Columbus at Herreshoff”, Sept. 10, 2009)

I attended Dr. da Silva’s lecture at the Herreshoff Marine Museum. It was magnificent presentation! He had a full house!  Besides showing many original documents for the first time in USA, he gave his lecture with an amazing enthusiasm and American patriotism.

The people of Bristol should also know about Dr. DaSilva’s public service concerning   his social and cultural achievements for the betterment of  the American society. He started the TV series “Portuguese Around Us”, lasting 31 years, in English to bridge the Portuguese and American social cultural values. He created another TV program in Portuguese “Os Portugueses” lasting four years in the Official RI State TV station.

He fought during six years, and won, for the abolishment of visa requirement for American citizens to visit the Azores islands.  Now, even at 83 years old,  he still moderates  a weekly TV program entitled “Medical Tribune”  in Portuguese to reassure  the Portuguese  immigrants in medical matters.  For more than 30 years he has been a guest  on a radio program at WHTB-AM, (Fall River),  live,  every Thursday mornings,  for  one hour, entitled  “Ask the Physician”. He has done all these programs on TV and radio for the good of people, all free of charge!  Long live Dr. Da Silva!

Respectfully,

Joseph L.  Brum
