The Knights of Corte Reais – named after the Corte Reais navigators --  was founded 40 years ago. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to betterment of  the social, cultural and historical values of the Portuguese Americans.

It continues to give scholarships to deserving Portuguese American students, gifts to charitable causes and  collections of books to the  Bristol Public Library. It has also presented floats on the Fourth of July Parade, and has obtained “First Prize Most Patriotic” and ”Most Original”.  It also has been  interested in the historical preservation of the Dighton Rock because Miguel Corte Real’s name and the Portuguese National symbols are engraved on that historical monument.

Our Regular Meeting

On Wednesday evening, November 10, 2004, The Knights had their monthly meeting at the Bristol Sports Club, 417 Wood Street, Bristol, RI 02809, Tel 401-253-4769.

We started at 7PM, with  a delicious meal: (1) Portuguese soup (everyone had a second serving); (2) mixed salad, (3) and /  choice of marinated pork with little necks and Alentejana, family style, / or pork loin & fish fillet, family style. (4) And then Portuguese dessert with fruit and coffee.

Everyone enjoyed the meal. It was delicious and abundant. We will show you the photos below.

We want to congratulate the Chef John Costa and the waitress Carla for the excellent meal and perfect service. We will be back next month, December 15, 2004.

After the meeting we had a regular meeting  which went very well. This was  followed by an animated raffle with the gifts brought  by the various members:  George Cooper (2 bottles of wine); Veronica Carreiro (2 bottles of wine); Dr. Luciano da Silva (1 bottle of wine); Joseph Moniz (1 bottle of wine).  The raffle created an exciting expectation because of the call of the number prizes. We will repeat this event at our next meeting.

Lecture

After the raffle, Dr. Luciano da Silva gave an illustrated lecture about the 4 Portuguese who won the Nobel Prizes and showed us slides of the House Museum of Professor António Egas Moniz,  in Avanca, Continental Portugal, who won the Nobel Prize of Medicine in 1948, because of his discovery of lobotomy and lobectomy of the brain (cutting off  pieces of  the brain in crazy people)  and also because of his discovery of  angiography technique, which is still  being used daily in many thousand of patients all over the world.   This museum has many unique items  of books of  science, of art,  paintings  and many silver pieces, and several  collections of dishes and glassware.

Dr. Da Silva  promised us that at the next meeting he  will take us  on a trip with color slides to the City of Chicago.
