did I write the book
”The
Electricity of Love!”
Before
I entered the Medical School at the University of Coimbra, in 1952, in Portugal,
I had already lived for six years
in New York City (1946-1952) and
had obtained a bachelor’s degree from New York University, in Biology.
This
was the period after the World War II, when America felt really victorious and New York City became the most
fabulous and famous city in the world!
Despite
so many marvelous things that this
great city offered, there
were two things
that were very shocking to
me:
(1)
the large number of illegitimate children
(2) the high percentage of
divorces.
Perhaps
influenced by the uncontrolled drama of the American sexual life, after I
completed my medical degree, I
wanted to specialize in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
During my postgraduate training soon I found out that my professional philosophy was to know the entire Human Being and therefore I changed my specialty into Internal Medicine. However practicing Internal Medicine, for more than three decades, I always kept a close interest in obstetrics and human sexuality. In my practice I had opportunity to hear many of my patients complain of sexual problems such as: lack of orgasm, impotence, venereal diseases, unwanted pregnancy, etc. In practically all of these cases I verified that there was a complete lack of the basic knowledge of sexual education!
There was a total ignorance of the ABC’s of human sexuality! Yet, there is in the United Sates of America an abundance of publications about sexual life, but these seem to put emphasis on pornography, sexual aberrations, and sensationalism in order to have a better sale! For these reasons I felt that there was a need for a book about NORMAL HUMAN SEXUALITY, written in very simple and clear language. A book that the common citizen could understand. I want to write a book that it could be read by the mother, the father and the children! A book that could be displayed anywhere in the house, and not to be hidden! A book that could be read in high schools, universities so that the youth of America could obtain a clear and healthy information about human sexuality!
It took me twenty two years to write “The Electricity of Love!” Therefore this book is the result of many years of observation, of sedimentation, and maturity on the subject of Human Sexuality. I was very selective on the use of proper terms and also on the selection of diagrams. I wanted to explain to the reader the very complex functioning of the human body in such a way that anyone could understand the fundamentals of anatomy and physiology of our bodies during the performance of human sexuality! The book “The Electricity of Love!” was published on November of 1984. Unfortunately the very reasons that stimulated me to write it and therefore decrease them, still exist today in high percentages: (1) the illegitimate children, and (2) the divorces.
Here is what I wrote on the preface in 1984:“In the last twenty years the sexual life in the New York City went from bad to worse! The famous “The New York Times” published on August 13, 1984, on the front page, an article describing the statistics of illegitimate children born and registered in the five boroughs of New York (with eight million of inhabitants) during the year of 1983”.
“In
the borough of Bronx, in the Harlem, the percentage of illegitimate children
reached the figure of 79.9 per cent! Forty years ago (1964)
in New York City the percentage of the illegitimate children,
in all the five boroughs, was
5 per cent, twenty years ago (1774) was 11 per cent and now is 37 per cent”. (1984)
“But
in Baltimore the total percentage of illegitimate children went up to 58 per
cent and in Newark, New Jersey has
already reached the figure of 59 per cent!
Similar calamity exists through out
America! “
And I concluded in 1984: “ Five hundred years ago the population of China was 250 millions, there is, equal to the population of the United Sates today”. “In the space of 500 years the population of China increased to one billion and two hundred million human beings! “ “Because of such human explosion, China created an obligatory plan to control its population, permitting ONLY one child per each marriage!” “In China NO illegitimate children are allowed! No doubt that China, in human sexual relations is 500 years ahead of the United States of America! “
“With
these monstrous statistics it is obvious that all nations, of the Third World
and of the Western World, have forcibly, to adopt rigorous measures to control
the birth rates, in order prevent
the destruction of human race on this planet! This responsibility belongs to the
religious leaders, to the governments
, to the health authorities and to the physicians!” This
shocking statement has even more validity today
(February, 2001)!
