Going to university is both an exciting and a daunting time. Students may be moving away from home for the first time, be more independent in terms of organising their own study schedule, and even have to cook for themselves! These sorts of factors, as well as the pressures of university-level study and preparing for exams can sometimes mean that students’ mental health needs a little bit of additional TLC.
What can students do in terms of self-care?
Fortunately, there are all kinds of things that students can do to exercise a little bit of self-care, which goes a long way in protecting their mental health.
These days, more of us are becoming wise to the many benefits of meditation and mindfulness. According to experts Calm only a few minutes of mindfulness and deep breathing each day make a considerable difference to our mental health. With a host of meditation apps out there to choose from, it’s easy to find some support for newbies and experienced meditators alike.
Exercise is another great way of looking after your mental health. Yoga, swimming and walking are all easy and great for your physical and mental health. All student apartments in Exeter and other universities are near sports facilities, so it’s easy to get out and get some exercise in.
Avoiding too much alcohol
Although it’s easy to get swept along in having a drink with friends, it’s actually been proven that alcohol is a depressant and does little for our mental health in the long run. Try to limit alcohol intake in order to protect your mental health (and avoid that hangover!)
Talk to others
A problem shared is a problem halved, as they say. In friendly student apartments Exeter and other university towns, you’re sure to have someone to talk to.
There are always student wellbeing officers on campus, too, so don’t hesitate to approach them for support if you feel you need to. Remember, talking about mental health struggles is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.
