Voight was born on July 30, 1934 in Yonkers, New York to Evelyn (née Pottkotter) and Elmer Voight. He has German-Jewish ancestry. His father worked as a machinist and his mother was a homemaker before they divorced during the Great Depression. While studying at the University of Montana he began acting at the Montana Theater in Missoula in 1949 (when he was 15 years old). In 1956 Voight came to Hollywood where for three years he worked as a stage actor which included performing with James Dean in “The Immoralist” by André Gide.
